Victim Services Unit

“To aid and assist victims of crime and tragedy by providing a community support program in partnership with the RCMP and Camrose Police Service.”

Camrose and District Victim Services is a police based community service made up of the Camrose RCMP and the Camrose Police Service. We are unique in that there are only two units in Alberta that provide services both to a municipal police service as well as the RCMP. We are housed in the Camrose Police Service Headquarters.

Camrose & District Victim Services has been in operation for ten years originating in 1997 with the Camrose RCMP. In 1999 the Camrose Police Service and the Camrose RCMP collaborated and came up with a very unique situation. Rather than have two Victim Service Units they decided to amalgamate services and have one unit that provides services to both the City of Camrose and the County area policed by the Camrose RCMP.

Camrose Victim Service Advocates are available 24 hours a day, 7days a week to assist victims of crime or trauma. We can provide support during the first few critical hours or by offering information and referrals in the weeks following an incident. Victims of crime & trauma are not alone. There is help for them and that is what we are there for.

The goal of Camrose Victim Services is simple - to make sure all victims of crime and tragedy have access to all available resources and services they need and deserve. With the assistance of the Camrose RCMP and the Camrose Police Service, we try hard to make that happen.

Victim Services is often thought of and described as “another arm of the Police”. They provide the extra support victims need as they enter the legal maze. Their motto is Support, Inform and Refer. They support the victim through the paper work and Court procedures, they inform the victim of all services they can access, and if required will refer the victims to appropriate agencies for counseling.

Most recently we have formed a partnership with the Canadian Red Cross Society Disaster Management. We can now offer assistance in the area of Red Cross Emergency service to victims of tragedy and trauma.

Camrose & District Victim Services is a non-profit volunteer organization. It is governed by a board of directors and has 15 volunteer advocates that must be certified by the Solicitor General. There is one paid position held by the program coordinator. Our funding is provided by grants, donations and fundraising.
