Camrose City Police would like to remind residents to be aware of certain scams and frauds which are again making there rounds through our community.
Much of the frauds deal with what is known as Nigerian Letter Scams or West African Fraud Letters. These work on the premises of what has been known as Social Engineering. That is, these fraudsters become masters at manipulated people into willingly divulging their banking, credit card information and performing tasks which will financially benefit the fraudster. This is done in a way that the victim does not even realize he/she is being victimized. By the time they realize what happened, the person is often out thousands of dollars.
These schemes’s start by you receiving some type of correspondence. This is usually done through receiving a fax, email, letter or from talking to someone is a chat room. The three common varieties are Cheque Overpayment Scams, Advance Fee Letters, and Dating Scams.
Cheque overpayment scams are currently widespread. They target a variety of individuals and age groups. These often target individuals who are offering items for sale whether online, auction or in a newspaper. Once the sale of the item is agreed upon the buyer will send you a cheque in an amount in excess of the amount owed for the item. You will then be asked to deposit the cheque into your own personal bank account. The buyer will then tell you to immediately transfer the excess money to him/her or a third party. To make the transaction appear legitimate you will often be told to keep some of the excess money for your troubles.
The way this scam works is in the fact that the cheque sent to you from the buyer will be counterfeit. The buyer is counting on you sending him/her money fast before the cheque has time to clear. By the time the cheque clears as counterfeit or NSF you had already sent the money to him/her. It is not uncommon for these cheques to take weeks to be returned as being fraudulent.
The premise of the advance fee letter is that the person is about to acquire a very large sum of money, often millions of dollars. In order to get this money he/she needs your assistance to pay certain “processing fees”. The promise is that once you send them the money you will get your share of the millions since you helped the person attain this. You are often offered 30% of the large amount of money for your efforts. You are asked to act quickly and keep this quiet.
Once you send your money it’s gone. It’s normally sent outside of Canada. You will never receive any money from the contact person and there is almost no chance of ever seeing it again.
Another variation of these scams is the one related to dating. In this fraud, you meet someone on a dating service or in a chat room who seems to have similar interests as you and is very caring. You get to know them through conversing over time. You cannot meet this person as they say they are away currently. Usually they advise they are away on business out of the country. Some type of emergency will occur where this person will need money right away from you. They will try and get you to send them money through a wire service or sometimes bank transfers. They promise to pay you back.
All of these scams require you to send money to the person. If money is sent your chances of ever seeing it again are virtually non existent. Before you send money to anyone, be sure you know that the transaction is legitimate. You should never have to give money to receive something for free.
A good resource is the Canadian Anti Fraud Call Centre also known as PhoneBusters http://www.phonebusters.com/ they can be reached by phone at
1-888-495-8501. If you have any doubt about the legitimacy of an online individual or a caller, please doe not hesitate to call the Police or contact PhoneBusters.
